. Parks and parkways in the Borough of the Bronx, New York City . d,public-spirited men, in that year, petitioned the State Legislature for acommission to choose land for the enlargement of the park area of theCity. In answer to the petition, an Act was passed (Chapter 253 of theLaws of the State of New York, 1883 ), which directed the Mayor of theCity of Xew York to appoint a commission of seven citizens for the pur-pose described in the petition. The then Mayor, Franklin Edson, appointed a commission, of which Luther R. Marsh was chairman, andsuch well-known residents of the borough as the Hon. Waldo Hutchins, and the late Hon. W. \Y. Niles were members. This commission workedwith such zeal that its report was ready for the Legislature of report urged that the city acquire 3,757 acres of new parks, or theterritory now represented by Van Cortlandt, Bronx, Pelham Bay, Cro-tona, St. Marys, and Claremont Parks. At the time of this recom-mendation, the territory included in Pelham Bay Park was not withinthe boundaries of the City of New York. 8. The report met with considerable opposition; but the Legislature,never-the-less, authorized the purchase of all the territory recommendedby the Commission. The fact should not be overlooked that the Com-missioners served without pay, actuated entirely by public spirit. Thecondemnation proceedings took some time. Title in the New parks,as they were called, did not vest in the city until December 12, 1888. Commemorative Tablets.—To commemorate the original Com-mission appointed in 1883 for the purpose of selecting grounds for theBronx Parks, the Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences presented to theCity six bronze tablets, each bearing the following inscription: Pursuant to an Act of Legislature Passed April 19, 1883,Mayor Franklin Edson Appointed the Following Commissionto Select and Locate Lands for Public Parks in the 23rd and24th Wards of The City of New York, and in the Vicinity Thereof: LUTHER R.
