Two houses below, the house now owned by Mr. Fred-erick Deming was built (a part of it), in 1797, by JohnAllen, who was a member of Congress for many years. JohnAllen was called The Giant, and Is said to have been overseven feet tall. He was so heavy that at his funeral the coffinwas dropped on the steps by the bearers. Hon. Gideon , who owned the house at one time, wrote there hisHistory of Connecticut. Mr. Edwin McNeill bought thehouse and greatly enlarged it, of whom Miss Clarissa bought it later. Its present owner, Mr. FrederickDeming, bought it in
