The Spegazzini Glacier is named after botanist Carlos Spegazzini, who made the first studies of the local flora in the 19th century. The glacier, with a surface area of 66 square kilometres (26 square miles), is 25 km ( miles0 long, km (1 mile) wide and has an ice front 80-135 metres (262-443 feet) high. It is one of 47 glaciers (13 flowing towards the Atlantic) in the Los Glaciares National Park, created in 1937 and made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The glacier is reached by catamaran tour boats sailing along the northern arm of Lake Argentino from Puerto Bandera, 45 kilometres west of El Calafate.
