A photograph showing the orange peel appearance of the skin seen in breast cancer.

The French term peau d'orange means orange skin. It is used in medicine to describe something with the look (orange colour) and texture (dimpled appearance) of an orange peel, for example the skin of the breast in inflammatory breast cancer. It refers more to the texture than the colour. The striking orange peel appearance stems from lymphatic oedema around deepened hair follicles.
