'Basiliensis Territorii Descriptio Nova. Circulus sive Liga Sueviae vulgo Schwabische Kraiss [A new description of the territories of Basle. The circle of Swabia, commonly known as Schwabische Kraiß]'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Abraham Ortelius after Sebastian Münster. Engraved by David Seltzlin. Provenance: "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" by Abraham Ortelius, Antwerp. Type: Antique sixteenth century copperplate map. Two maps on one sheet. Uncoloured. Two maps on one sheet. The left hand map, which is orientated towards the east, shows the environs of Basle. The river Rhine runs across the centre of the map from the left hand side, before turning towards the top of the map (eastwards) at Basle. The Vosges mountains are located at the bottom left of the map, and part of the Black Forest at the upper left. Freiburg is marked along the left hand edge. The right hand map, which is normally orientated, shows the historic region of Swabia in southwestern Germany - part of present day Baden-Württemberg. Zurich and part of lake Zurich are marked in the lower left hand corner. The Bodensee can be seen in the lower centre part of the map. Starsbourg is marked along the western edge of the map. The Danube River crosses the map from the centre of the right-hand edge. Stuttgart and Heilbronn are marked towards the north, and Augsburg is marked near the right hand edge of the map
