Such a man is Mr. Max Levine, who began his business career in Americawith $ capital and is now one of the most prominent men in Lewistown, Pa. He was born in Kovna, Guberne, Russia, September 15, 1863, and cameto America in 188S. Coming to a brother in Harrisburg, Pa., with but theafore-mentioned $ for capital, he obtained credit for a small stock ofmerchandise, which he started peddling with a pack. This he continued for 175. four years when he decided to go to Africa. This was a most unfortunatemove from a financial standpoint, but very rich in experience. ReturningtoHarrisburg he arrived with but $, but having left behind him a reputationfor absolute reliability, he received credit for a horse and wagon and startedbuying and selling old clothing and scrap metal. Four years later he went to Lewistown where his present large establish-ment is located, although the family still lives in Harrisburg. Mr. and Mrs. Levine have six children, five boys and one girl.
