Once the site of Herrington Colliery with a large pit heap or spoil tip, the area has been transformed and is now one of the largest open air recreational spaces within Sunderland. It attracts numerous visitors with its safe cycling and walking paths, lakes and a café. It is the venue for various sporting and cultural events throughout the year.
