Aizuwakamatsu has prospered for centuries as a castle town. Ashina was the first feudal lord to rule this area from 1379. Afterward a succession of feudal lords governed the town. Tsuruga Castle, the symbol of Aizuwakamatsu, has witnessed successive generations of feudal lords. Its predecessor was Kurokawa Castle but the name was changed to Tsuruga Castle in 1593, and at that time a seven-tiered castle was born. In 1639, Lord Kato Akinari renovated the castle to create the five-tiered, white walled castle tower that can be seen today. The current castle was rebuilt in 1965.
