One of the four main gate houses, Boortham Bar (part of the city fortified medieval wall) at the entrance into High Petergate in the historical city of York in Yorkshire, Britain. A street name with the ending of Gate, is a Viking word for ÔstreetÕ. In AD 866, the invading Danish Vikings made York their capital city - Jorvik. The name, bar, acted as a toll booth during medieval times and also used for controlling traffic in, and outside of the city.
