Blood sampling. Technician taking a sample from a bag of separated blood platelets (yellow). These platelets (thrombocytes) have been collected from blood donated by a volunteer, a process known as plateletpharesis or thrombapharesis. Platelets are the blood cells responsible for clotting, and can be given to people with clotting disorders. They are also given to those with abnormally low platelet numbers in their blood, such as leukaemia chemotherapy patients or those undergoing heart bypass surgery. The clear solution on the right is an anticoagulant, used to prevent the platelets from clotting too quickly. Photographed at the Sanquin blood bank in the Netherlands.
