Red sandstone, close-up. This quartzose (quartz-containing) sand, cemented by clay and silica, settled in sedimentary basins during the Permian (260 million year ago). Iron oxide produces the reddish colour. This rock is used as a construction stone. This specimen is part of the Geoscope geological park, located between Les Monts-Vert and Albaret-Sainte-Marie, central France.
