Diagnostic methods, chemical, bacteriological and microscopical, a text-book for students and practitioners . monstrable cause is difficultly separable fromthe secondary form as well as from certain other primary forms, such as primarypernicious anemia. It will probably be shown to be a true secondary anemiaand must be sharply differentiated from the pernicious type from the point ofprognosis. These cases are only recognizable when they are typical in formand are frequently not amenable to any form of treatment which we mayinstitute. The rule, however, is that these forms of anemia yield more or lesspromptly to proper dietetic and therapeutic treatment. It is probable thatthe question of prognosis in these cases must depend largely upon the amountof degeneration of the red cells which occurs.^ In these cases we find that the See Pollitzer (Ztschr. f. klin. Med., 1912, LXXV, 367) for a discussion of the types ofregeneration and degeneration in anemia; also, Wichern and Piotrowski, Deutsch. Arch. f. klin. Med., 1912, CVI, 533; Pribram, Deutsch. The leucocytes are usually normal in numberand in differential relations, while the blood plates are usually changes in the plasma in anemia are not characteristic, although we do observe a diminution in the specific gravity which runs parallelto the oligochromemia. Chlorosis is a primary anemia occurring almost exclusively in girls aboutthe age of puberty and characterized by a marked reduction in the amountof hemoglobin and a slight change in the number of
