AYETTE COUNTY was formed in 1831, by detach-ing certain portions from Kanawha, Greenbrier, Nicho-las and Logan counties. It is bounded on the north byKanawha and Nicholas counties, on the east by Nicho-las and Greenbrier, on the south by Summers andRaleigh, and on the west by portions of Raleigh andKanawha counties. It contains 740 square miles. Ittakes its name from that illustrious foreigner who sogenerously espoused the cause of the American colonies whenthe oppressions of the mother country became too grave to belonger endured — the brave, patriotic, disinterested La county seat, Fayetteville, also takes its name from the samedistinguished and venerated personage.
