Camouflaged European plaice. The European plaice or flatfish (Pleuronectes platessa) spends the day buried under sand on the seabed (centre). Its eye is seen at upper right. This fish inhabits the northeast Atlantic and western Mediterranean. It can grow to 1 metre in length and weigh 7 kilograms. It is a long lived fish, with some specimens dated at 50 years old. Plaice feed on thin-shelled molluscs and polychaete worms. It is of commercial importance to northern Europe. Photographed off England.
