A late 19th Century illustration of the Battle of Gravelotte that took place on 18 August 1870, the largest battle of the Franco-Prussian War. Named after Gravelotte, a village in Lorraine, it was fought some 10 kilometres west of Metz and resulted in complete the destruction of French forces.
