It made its first appearance at the Band Concert given in March and credited itself with much success. On June 29, 1870, the faculty had been authorized to establish a militarydepartment. Nothing was done until 1877, when Major C. W. Smith of Indiana-polis was appointed to organize such a department. Captain D. D. Wheelerof the First Artillery, was detailed in June, by the Secretary of War to act asprofessor of military tactics. Drill was required only from freshmen and sopho-mores, but such was the enthusiasm among the students, that large numbers ofthe other classes and of the preparatory students volunteered. Captain Wheelerwas superseded by Lieuteneant William R. Hamilton of the Fifth Artillery. Onthe afternoon of February 2, 1880, thirty or forty girls gathered together and formeda ladies cadet company under the leadership of Lieutenant Hamilton.
