In this connection it is a source of gratification to this establishment to have been the cause of the successful acquisition of Smyrna Fig culture to America, and at the same time we desire to impress intend- ing planters that ours is the only establish- ment in this country having a large stock of these trees now on hand ready for imme- diate delivery. Grown under our own per- sonal supervision, we can guarantee gen- uineness in our stock as well as quality. Caprification. According to Dr. C. V. Riley it is a botanica-entomological oper- ation, consisting in the transfer of certain minute insects called Blastophaga gros- sorum, which develop in the seeds of the Capri Fig, to the edible fig proper, in order to secure through these insects the fertili- zation of the female flowers and fruit. This operation is an essential factor in connection with the growing of Smyrna Figs, for with- out the intervention of this little insect the Smyrna Fig never matures, but drops from the trees when quite small.
