The subject of thisthesis was to malce a survey ofthe Chicago Loop District downto\ra., including Wabash Avenuefrom Van Buren to Lal^e Street,Lalce Street, from Wabash Avenueto Fifth Avenue, Fifth Avenuefrom La]<e Street to Van BurenStreet and Van Buren Street, from Fifth Avenue to WabashAvenue, We also investigatedthe sairie district for electrolysisof Y/ater pipes along same nan eelstreets. Curves of various typeswere plotted, showing relationof voltage, current, and differentpoints along the 4 THEORY. It is a known fact that whenever a current passes from aWftter pipe, gas pipe, telephone cable, or most any substance into the grovmd, corrosion takes place and a mere fraction of a volt may produce the cox-rosion. It has been stated thatanything under 1,5 volts can notproduce any trouble, but thisis not true« The statement ismade that water will not flissociatebelow 1,5 volts. This is a mis-take, however, because as currentpasses from iron to ground andthen to iron, and produces corrosion, the counter, E, M, F. is only asmall part of a volt. In certain kinds ofearth, current could leave a pipewith little or no effect, onaccount of the chemical actionwhich neutralizes the corrosi-^eeffect. <*: .vw 6 It is not generallyknown that alternat ing currentwould effect water pipes orproduce corrosion. This is true, however, as experiments haveshown, but only In soil which ismade up of a certain composit
