Flock of Starlings arriving at its roost in Rome, Italy. The spectacular shapes formed are often due to Peregrine Falcon attacks

Every winter evening spectacular Starling flocks gather over their roosting areas in Rome and form unusual shapes as they approach the trees they roost in. More often than not, these shapes are caused by Peregrine Falcon attacks, as in this case. The silhouette of a Peregrine Falcon is visible in the middle of the photograph. Other predators that commonly attack these Starling flocks in the evening include Herring Gull and Kestrel.
