Cataract surgery. Patient's eye having the conjunctiva (surface membrane) lifted during cataract surgery. This enables the surgeon to perform a subtenon block, in which he anaesthetises the Tenon's capsule (fascia bulbi), a sheath covering the part of the eye enclosed within the socket. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. The surgeon will remove the abnormal lens and replace it with a prosthetic one.
