Stokesley Market Town of North Yorkshire West End war memorial
There are 4 memorials to the Fallen of Perhaps the most obvious of these to any visitor to the town is the Cross erected beside the road on West Green. This memorial was unveiled on Wednesday 5th October 1921. Bronze plaques on three sides of plinth record the names of men who died in the two World Wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45. On the fourth side is a dedication to the dead of the Parish during World War I, shown in the photograph on the left. Forty-three of their names are listed on two plaques. On one side of the cross itself, another plaque records that the names of the dead of World War II (of whom there are thirteen) were added to the memorial "by the people of Stokesley" in 1947. It may be that this plaque is a replacement for another as what appear to be the original fixing points for its predecessor can be seen beneath the newer plaque
