They stated thatthe officers from Yedo, who had been delegated to meet the Americans atHakodadi, had not yet come; and that the people had been greatly alarmedat the arrival of the ships, as there had been no previous intimation of theintended visit of the squadron, and they had not even heard of the treaty,or of the opening of Simoda. The Japanese officials were then informed thaton the next day a delegation of his officers would be sent by the Commo-dore on shore to confer with the authorities.
