The Hall-Scott Motor Car Company, with general offices in San Francisco and factories at Berkeley, California, began specializing in the construction of airplane engines in 1911. The water-cooled 30 kW (40 hp) Type A-1 was the first aircraft engine produced by the company. Despite vibration common to four-cylinder engines at the time, the A-7-A was otherwise regarded by experts as a rugged and dependable motor. The A-7-A also powered other Standard, Aero Marine, and Dayton-Wright aircraft.
