The Great Flood. 1868 artwork of people drowning in a flooded world. In the Bible's book of Genesis, God becomes angry at the evil behaviour of mankind and decides to flood the world and destroy all life. However, he makes an exception for one good man, Noah, who he instructs to build an ark in order to save his family and two of every animal. Myths of deluges (downpours leading to floods) are also found in other creation stories around the world, such as in the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh.
