He was placed in a merchants office,but soon turned to art, and in 1817 exhibited at the Academy. He was one of the foundersof the Society of British Artists. He belonged to the classical school of landscape paintersand was first inspired by the works of Claude and Wilson. He travelled much and mostof his later works are landscapes in Italy and Greece, often with representations of classicallegends.
