Marcus TuUius Cicero was born at Arpinum (now Arpino)in January, 106 b. c, the son of M. Tullius Cicero, an opulentplebeian of the equestrian order. He was liberally educatedat Rome under the direction of numerous teachers, amongwhom were Archias, the Greek poet, whom he defended andeulogized in one of his extant orations, and Philo the Acade-mic philosopher. Cicero learned to speak Greek fluently,and became profoundly versed in Hellenic literature andculture.
