Residential houses totally washed away at the badly damaged and leveled Ishinomaki 1 year after the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami

Ishinomaki (石巻市) is a city in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It was among the most seriously affected by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami with 3097 confirmed deaths and 2770 unaccounted for. Several tsunamis, up to about 10 metres (33 ft) high traveled inland up to 5 kilometres ( mi) from the coast. The tsunamis destroyed around 80% of the 700 houses in the coastal whaling port of Ayukawa. The Kadonowaki neighborhood was largely levelled. Approximately 46% of the city was inundated by the tsunami. Photo was taken on the 1st year anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku Great Earthquake and Tsunami. Many people flocked to Ishinomaki, in the Miyagi Prefecture, especially to the Kadonowaki Elementary School to pay their respects and offer prayers to the deceased on this painful day. The school was completely destroyed by the tsunami and the ensuing fire even though it laid almost 2km inland. The area in front of the school was completely levelled. The school was one of the worst affected by the earthquake and tsunami with 70 out of its 108 students and 9 of its 13 teachers dead.
