Trafalgar Square, aerial photograph. Trafalgar Square was designed by Sir Charles Barry to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), and building was completed in 1845. At the centre of the square is Nelson's Column (thin black shadow at centre), a pillar which holds a statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died defeating the Spanish navy at the Battle of Trafalgar. Behind this are two ornamental fountains (blue circles) in front of the National Gallery. On the other side of the square is Admiralty Arch (lower centre). which marks the entrance to The Mall, an avenue which leads to Buckingham Palace.
