Fan-tail fly. Light micrograph of the whole body of the long-headed fan-tail fly (Dolichopus ungulatus). The fly's body has three major parts: the abdomen, thorax and head. The abdomen is at centre left. Attached to the thorax is a pair of wings (upper right), a pair of halteres (balancers) and three pairs of legs (lower frame). The head (centre right) includes compound eyes, ocelli (simple eyes), a pair of antennae, a pair of maxillary palps and the proboscis. This fly has postocular cilia (bristles on top and behind the head), and its genitalia (centre left, at the end of the abdomen) are clearly seen. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
