Detail of the stuccoed ceiling in The Oval room of Teylers Museum, Haarlem, North Holland, The Netherlands. Teylers Museum dates from 1784. The Oval Room is simultaneously practical and symbolic. Suffused with the atmosphere of Classicism atmosphere, it contains all manner of references not only to the sciences, but also to thinkers and the Classics. On the basis of its columns and pilasters alone, it embodies a stylistic reference to Greek and Roman architecture, and to that first expression of scientific enthusiasm in modern European history, the Oval Room is not so much a building as a single large piece of furniture: a bookcase and display cabinet. In keeping with the ideals of the Enlightenment, it was used to study, practice and demonstrate science. It is the very heart of Teylers Museum, just as it was originally conceived and shaped by its first director, Martinus van Marum. The authenticity of the Teylers is guaranteed beyond question. The interior, function and ownership structure of the museum have remained unchanged since its inception in 1784. The museum's most striking feature is that it remains completely intact; it has never been rebuilt, only had new extensions added. It's listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
