All the troops cheered lustily and long, especially themen of the Twenty-seventh. Still, with us there was TWENTY-SEVENTH INDIANA. 437 sudden revulsion of sentiment. We had never felt quitesatisfied with our position in the Eastern army. Weseemed so far away from home there and so much isolatedfrom the soldiers with whom it was natural that we shouldaffliliate. And, because of these things, as we believed, wehad been the victims of some unjust aspersions and our dayshad been made more burdensome and galling than necessary,with few to sympathize or encourage. The Twenty-seventh had, at thistime, its full share of the pride, which all who were ever con-nected with it will always cherish, for the Army of the Poto-mac. We all believed in it, heart and soul, and we all gloriedin being identified with its history. All of us insisted that itsfailures and defeats were the result of incompetency and mis-management on our side, as opposed to the best troops andthe best directed efforts of the enemy.
