Iridescence. Butterfly with iridescent wings on a surface coated with iridescent material. Iridescence is caused by the tiny microstructures of the surface reflecting light in different ways, rather than the pigments contained within the surface. Scientists have studied and copied iridescent structures found in nature, such as butterfly wings, and used them to create man-made products with similar properties, such as the material seen here.
