XXII.—Hugh the 4th son of Sir Nicholas Hde and grandson ofWm. Hole of South Hole in Devonshire, married Cecily, daugh-ter and coheir of Nicholas Cole of Paignton. Removed fromDevonshire to Nottinghamshire, and had issue, Job a, Margery,Margaret and Elizabeth. While Vicar of Caunton, Hugh Holebecame possessed of the Manor of Caunton, a family estate whichHad for some generations belonged to a branch of the Holefamily, his ancestors. This famous home has been owned bythe Holes since the year 1240, and is the site of the celebratedRose Gardens of Dean Hole and his lady. XXIII.—Sir John* Hole, born 1560, only son of Hugh, counsellor-at-law, married a Fortescne of Preston, in Ermington, and had is-sue, Henry, (died unmarried) Thomas, Josias and Philippa, whomarried Richard Dean. XXIV.—Rev. Thomas Hole, born 1589—died 1679 (Parish Regis-ter), married Aelanore Douglas and had issue, Richard and Jacob— XXV.—Jacob Hole, born 1647, wifes name not known—had issue,two sons, John who died 1711, and Jacob. John the oldest sonremained in England and inherited the Manor of Caunton.*Jacob, the younger son came to America and was the founderof the 1 irge family of Holes
