S. flag, Plenty, holding fruit-filled cornucopia & Peace, holding green olive branch; to their L is winged figure of France wearing helmet & holding shield featuring 3 fleur-de-lys flying towards Tuscan column on L; oval medallion with profile head of George Washington is tied to column with ropes of greenery, winged Victory grasps top of medallion; at foot of column is Britannia, holding shield over her head, next to 2 discarded cannons & 2 leopards; 2 birds, 1 flying down to earth & the other with outstretched wings on ground (R) (BRD) foliated picture-frame border with acanthus leaves in corners; the inner border with acanthus leaves alternating with beads This panel is part of a set of tapestries & upholstery alluding to the War of American Independence & the part played by the French in achieving it. It was woven by the order of King Louis XVI & probably intended as a gift to George Washington, though the Revolution prevented the transaction from materializing. This series comprises 4 panels, representing America, Europe, Africa & Asia, along with 28 covers, eventually mounted in 19th century
