A practical treatise on the technics and principles of dental orthopedia and prosthetic correction of cleft palate . CHAPTER XX. MODERN PRINCIPLES AND METHODS 169 There is no objection to employing any of the alloys of gold and platinum forthe arch-bows, if specially drawn, but for all intents and purposes 18 per centnickel silver spring wire if properly drawn, will answer every requirement. Ortho-dontists who have not tested the possibilities of high-grade nickel silver can hardlyrealize the higher degree of spring temper and resiliency that can be given to arch-bows of this material when drawn cold from very much larger sizes. Fig. The arch-bows of the above small sizes, if intended for the purposes referredto, should be drawn from Nos. 14 to 16 high-grade spring nickel silver wire, withoutannealing, and kept cold in the process with a small bag of crushed ice placed overthe draw plate. The particular characters of malocclusion for which these very light resilientarch-bows are especially adapted, are those which are commonly composed of avariety of malpositions which arise during the early eruptive stages of the per-manent teeth, and which are commonly due to local causes. In the apparatus 170 PART V. PRIMARY PRINCIPLES OF PRACTICE shown in Fig. 106, the arch-bows are No. 26. In the bracket attachments onthe lower incisors, the gingival hooks are for direct intermaxillary elastics to aid inclosing the open-bite. See Construction of Bands for the Midget Appliances,Chapter XVIII. After this apparatus was placed on the teeth and the patientinstructed in the adjustment of the elastics, the case was not seen oftener
