In this early-1890s photo, this fellow was a professional strongman who made his living doing feats of strength in circuses, sideshows, etc. The heavy block of stone has a rope attached, for lifting in various ways. At lower left is a flat, rectangular stone and a sledgehammer. One act involved putting the big stone on the strongman's chest, while he was lying down, and letting an audience member hit the stone with the sledgehammer. There is a chance that this was Arthur Dandurand, a French-Canadian strongman. To see my other circus-related images, Search: Prestor vintage circus
