Its cost to the present time exceeds $1,700,000. In 181 ± the British set fire to the building, but heavyrains extinguished the conflagration before it had irretriev-ably injured the walls. Three years later the house hadbeen restored, and it was then painted white to cover theunsightly ravages of fire on its walls, a color which hasever since been retained. The building is 170 feet in lengthand eighty-six feet in depth, and consists of two highstories, with a basement.
