James II (1633-1701) landing in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland in March 1689. King of England and of Ireland, he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The following year James landed in Ireland and worked to build an army in Ireland, but was ultimately defeated at the Battle of the Boyne on 1 July 1690 when King William personally lead an army to defeat James and reassert English control.
