The steel as it is receivedfrom the cars is stacked in piles accord-ing to heat number, and as required ispicked up by air hoists and placed on thegravity conveyor shown in the illustra-tion of the steel yard. The steel travels on this conveyor tothe first position in the cutting-off shopwhere each bar is marked from gaugesto the proper length. The bars next passon the the same conveyor to the nickingposition where they are ni k<^d to theproper depth by the oxyacetylene shown, two gangs of men work at thi«position and using torches and apparatussupplied by LAir Liquide Society rapidlynick the bars on one
