Thisname, the touchstones of the man, is given bysome writers to these organs, and probably from thissource comes the name stones in common use. The testes (or testicles) lie side by side with a di-vision wall or raphe between them. Upon the backpart of each lies a narrow flattened body called the TRUE MANHOOD. 177 epididymis. The two spermatic cords, one for eachtestis, pass upward into the pelvis upon either side ofthe bladder. The sac within which the testes andepididymis are suspended is called the scrotum. Just within the surrounding outer cuticle or mtegu-ment is a muscular tissue called the dartos, a musclewhich, with the cord, sustains the scrotum in Fig. XL VI. The testicles are glands. Like the other glands ofthe body they are composed of a countless numberof cells, a plexus of tubing, and a duct to conveyaway the secretion. In structure this gland reminds us of the liver, in lyg TRUE MANHOOD. that it is built on the lobular plan; its cells, vesselsand ducts being gathered into separate bundles calledlobules. Each lobule is covered with a network of blood-vessels. Over this lies another coat or membrane, composed of fibers of white muscle interlacing inevery direction, and called the white tunic. Still athird, a serous membrane or sheath coat, envelopesthe entire gland. See lo. Fig. XLVI. In a full grown man each testis is a little over aninch long, not quite an inch wide, and a
