UNITED STATES - Jan 02: 1607 Jamestown Virginia Burials. Crosses mark where archaeological excavations revealed 30 grave shafts at the newly found Jamestown fort on Jamestown Island along the banks of the James River. They are located beneath the remnants of the ca. 1611 ÒCouncillorÕs RowÓ building, and therefore pre-date the construction of that structure. According to 1606 Virginia Company instructions, the colonists were to conceal their numbers of sick and dead from the Virginia Indians, hence these burials inside the fort likely date to the disastrous summer of 1607 when only 38 of the original 104 settlers survived.
