A wharf extending into the seaa distance of 750 feet has been leased for twenty 3ears,and upon the end of the pier has been extended 200 feetof very stable wharfing, upon which has been erectedthe plant shown in the accompanying illustrations. Thegeneral scheme of the Gerlach wave motor will beunderstood from a study of the first illustration. Twosets of vanes or paddle wheels swing with the surges ofthe waves, and from the extremities of each, chains fit tosprocket wheels, equipped with the differentiating / / PADDLE SUSPENSION OF GERLACH WAVE MOrOK. to be described, and by means of which rotation isimparted to the shaft carrying the large fly-wheel detail, this main shaft is thirty feet in length and eightinches in diameter. The fly-wheel has a diameter oftwenty-four feet six inches; it weighs 60,000 pounds; itsgrooved face has a width of four feet. Upon this shafthas been placed four sprocket wheels, two for eachpaddle, and a portion of which are clearlv shown inFigure 2. Each of these sprocket wheels is live feet indiameter, and is provided with eight right-hand toggles, two and one-half bv six inches in size, which act aspawls. Bv running two chains from each paddle, one ofwhich chains is connected direct to its sprocket wheeland the other being carried over an idler wheel beforebeing secvu-ed to the sprocket wheel, the same directionof pull is given to the shaft for either stroke or swing ofthe paddle. The paddles are each mounted upon ashaft ei^ht inches in diameter and fi
