C8th pilgrim crosses at St Ninian's Cave nr Whithorn, Wigtown: a place of retreat long associated with the C5th founder of Whithorn monastery


Votive C8th crosses outside the mouth of St Ninian's Cave near Whithorn. A place of retreat long associated with the C5th founder of Whithorn monastery and visited by pilgrims to his shrine at Whithorn. The top cross has been recut, incised rather than pocked like the others. There are at least seven similar crosses carved on the rock faces. Cross-marked stones & a grave marker from the cave have been removed to Whithorn Priory Museum.
