When building started in the 12th Century, it immediately started tilting because of soft ground and consequent unstable foundations. The tower of Pisa is actually the campanile, or bell tower, of Pisa cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, also shown here. Pisa Cathedral is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Italy. Its construction commenced as early as 1063, and various construction and restoration phases went on for centuries.
