Western toad (Anaxyrus boreas), a threatened species on Haida Gwaii, BC

The beautiful Western toad (Anaxyrus boreas) is the only amphibian native to Haida Gwaii. Haida Gwaii Western toads are listed as a species of special concern, and numbers are falling. One possibility is that the toads on Haida Gwaii are losing their breeding sites and food to one or both of the introduced frog species now on the islands — tree frogs (Pacific chorus frogs) and northern red-legged frogs. The latter eat the HG toad eggs, tadpoles and young frogs. Introduced racoons will also eat the toads.
