Eastern Pacific Ocean, seafloor map. North is at top. North America is at upper right. Most of this hemisphere is water, with scattered volcanic islands. The seabed depth varies from shallow (light blue) on the continental shelves, to deep (dark blue) in the ocean basins (most of this image). Most of the seafloor is relatively uniform in appearance, with some faint ridges and blocks. At upper left is Hawaii, and the chain of volcanic islands and underwater mountains formed by a mantle plume, or hotspot. The topography of the ocean basins has been depicted using ETOPO2-2 (Earth Topography) satellite altimetry data. The land areas use data from the Blue Marble satellite mosaic.
