Active work was again undertaken by the Catholics underthe leadership of Father Odin, Archbishop at New Orleans,who visited Texas in 1840, when only two priests were left inthe republic, and both of these with such unsavory reputa-tions that he immediately discharged them from the work of himself and other priests who cameafter him, within twenty-one years there were fifty priests.
