The loafer is adifficult problem in all countries ; but the fact thatthe percentage of convictions to the total indenturedpopulation amounted to 14-7, 35 per cent, of whichwere cases of habitual idleness, shows the employersof British Guiana are imposed upon by a considerablenumber of coolies; and such a gang as I saw swellthe admission rate to hospital without representingany real ill-health.
