STS-47, Astronaut Jemison in Spacelab, 1992
Astronaut Mae Jemison floating inside the Spacelab-J experiment module, during Shuttle Mission STS-47. Jemison, a general practice doctor, flew as a medical specialist on this mission, and was the first African-American woman to go into space. Spacelab-J was a module carried inside the Shuttle's cargo bay, and contained 43 experiments in life and materials sciences. The laboratory was a joint venture between NASA and Japan. Mission STS-47 flew between the 12th and 20th of September, 1992.
