George Burt, a local wealthy quarryman and mason, commissioned this huge stone globe at Durlston Head, near Swanage. The globe weighs 40 tons and is 3 metres in diameter and was erected in 1887. The Globe is made from 11 blocks of local Portland Limestone and was constructed in Mowlem's Yard in Greenwich in 1887.
